  • 1 night in a Riad with pool in Marrakesh 1 night in a B and B in Imil or Aroumd, 2 nights in Toubkal Refuge

Overview

This Moroccan adventure sees us trekking through the dramatic landscape of the High Atlas Mountains, summiting Northern Africa’s highest peak, Mt Toubkal at 4167m.

Our challenge begins in Marrakesh before we travel to the quaint village of Imlil and make our way up towards Mt Toubkal’s base camp. We pass through traditional Berber villages, meeting the friendly locals. Our luggage will be transported by mules as we trek along the zig zagging paths admiring the stunning scenery that surrounds us. We will overnight in mountain refuges and enjoy traditional Moroccan cuisine. Reaching the summit we are rewarded with breathtaking views over the dramatic peaks. We return to base camp before our final descent where we then transfer to Marrakesh. Marrakech is built around the 12th century Koutoubia Mosque whose beautiful minaret dominates the skyline and can be seen from almost every approach. Any visit to Marrakech must include a visit to the medina and its colourful souk (marketplace) where you can barter for carpets, leather goods, jewellery, lanterns and spices. Another must-see is the legendary Djemaa el-Fna, the busiest and most famous square in Africa, where snake charmers, storytellers, acrobats, medicine men and musicians compete for your attention.

Itinerary

Today you will fly into Marrakesh where you will meet the team and board a timed group transfer to Marrakesh.
We enjoy a relaxing evening in Marrakesh or Imil depending on flight arrival time with dinner and a trip briefing. Accommodation is in a riad in Imlil or Marrakesh.

After breakfast we head south towards the High Atlas range on a transfer which takes around 1h30. Driving along the Plaine du Haouz we pass olive groves bordered with cacti. The road climbs gradually to the gorge of Moulay Brahim to reach Asni, a small town where a weekly market takes place every Saturday. The mountains begin to surround us as we pass through the Ait Mizane valley filled with apple and cherry plantations.

On arrival we meet our local mule handlers in Imil. Luggage and equipment will be carried by mules all the way to the base camp. The walk starts with a zigzag path to the village of Aroumd, built on a glacial moraine. We cross a dry river bed following the valley up to the shrine of Sidi Chamharouch, known by locals for its curative power and for trekkers as a refreshment stop.

The climb starts to get a bit steeper but always on a well maintained track. After a picnic lunch enjoying the alpine scenery we continue to the Toubkal Refuge (3, with high peaks on both sides. FAQs

Will my luggage be carried by mules?

On arrival to the hamlet of Imlil, the starting point of all the climbs, you will meet your local crew of mule
handlers. Luggage and equipment will be carried by mules all the way to the base camp. The walk starts with
a zigzag mule path to the village of Aremd, built on a glacial moraine the you cross a dry river bed to catch
another regular path following the valley up to the shrine of Sidi Chamharouch known for locals for its curative
power and for trekkers as a refreshment stop. You will carry a day pack up Toubkal itself.

What is the average temperature and weather like during winter?

Temperatures can range from -10°C to 5°C (14°F to 41°F) at higher altitudes. Weather can be unpredictable, with potential snowstorms, so it’s important to check forecasts before your climb.

How hard is it?

Difficulty and terrain

This tour is rated strenuous and is suitable for those in excellent physical condition, who have some trekking experience. However, no mountaineering or climbing experience is required. The trek to Mount Toubkal is non-technical but very demanding. The terrain is varied, and the trails are often exposed to the sun. In the mountains, the routes follow ancient Berber tracks, which can be high, steep, narrow, uneven and rough underfoot. Some parts of the walk are above the snow line and crampons will be provided if needed during the winter months. Due to the lack of signposted trails, you will be supported by a local qualified mountain guide and for your trip a British International Mountain Leader.

How do I prepare to climb Toubkal in winter?

It is good to gain some experience of walking with crampons on in winter. You should be able to handle 1500m of ascent on the summit day and train for this. You will recieve more info in our zoom call.
