Overview
Over 100,000 people escaped this way during WW2 either along the coast before the German patrols increased or up into the mountains later in the war to evade them following a secret map from the mayor Azuma in Banyuls sur la Mer. It was part of the Varian Fry escape line within the Pat O’Leary reseau. Canet Plage was a key location for the extraction of escapers and evaders by sea. In April 1941, two agents were infiltrated and then the next night at a nearby location, Pat O’Leary was left behind. “Pat O’Leary” was the pseudonym of Albert Guérisse, one of the early leaders of the line, which helped more than 600 Allied soldiers and airmen escape from France to Spain.
This Pyrenees Freedom Trail, follows the escape route taken by Jewish philosopher Walter Benjamin during WWII assisted by female passeur Lisa Fittko. You will hike from Collioure, France to Cap de Creus, Spain along the Vermillion coast of the Costa Brava.
Unsurprisingly, the coast (in French the Côte Vermeille, in Spanish the Costa Brava) and its fishing villages have long attracted many artists, among them Dalí, Picasso and Matisse, who were drawn by the bright Mediterranean light. This trip includes four or five days of trekking and a six day trip in total, however we can offer it in 7 days. Options are to stop in Llanca, walking to the Saint Pere de Rodes monastery or continuing straight to Port de la Selva and the Walter Banjamin tour of Portbou.
We finish in Figueres where the British often assisted escapees in reaching their final destinations and a womens prison held Virginia Hall, the famous and successful SOE agent before she was released. We also visit the poignant Rivesaltes museum near Perpignan which really sets the scene at the start of the trip. Many escapees arrived via Perpignan and vanished into Spain heading for Barcelona after a short stay in captivity. This route through to Barcelona crossing over the Col de Rumpissa was featured in the film Transatlantic. Our extension to Cap de Creus before heading to Figueres is in the interest of art and beauty!
For this trip, there is one itinerary sticking closer to the coast and another ‘escape col’ route through the stunning Alberes mountains.
